A Parent’s Guide to Spina Bifida
As we know, there are some people that unfortunately were born with a defect. The defect are various among them. And, that condition often makes them in some difficult situation that normal people don’t have.
Now, we are going to talk about one of the birth defects. It is Spina Bifida. Maybe, you have ever seen a boy or girl who has a bulging on their backs. It is because the bones in the spine cannot grow properly around the spinal cord. As a result, there is an opening in the spine. In a severe case, the kids cannot move their part of bodies properly and seems to have any loss of intelligence. Those are the characteristics of Spina Bifida.
Normally, our spines are closed to protect the spinal cord and nerves. As you know, the function of the nerves is to send messages to the brain in order to make instruction for the body. Due to the opening spine, the nerves may be broken. As a result, the messages cannot be transferred to the brain properly. Thus, some people who have Spina Bifida cannot move their part of bodies as a result of the instruction from the brain.
Spina Bifida in a severe case is divided into two types. They are Meningocele and Myelomeningocele camera. Both of them are characterized by a bulge in their skin. But, in Myelomeningocele, the bulge contains the nerves. As a result, a kid with Myelomeningocele is unable to walk, run, dance, or even feel the pain of touching hot water.
Experts say that the cause of Spina Bifida is genetically inherited. Parents who have dominant genetic may transfer the gen to their children. Experts also say that a woman who suffers from diabetes and obesity has a risk to deliver baby with Spina Bifida.
