Bracing Treatment for Scoliosis

For someone who has scoliosis disease, bracing treatment is one of the prevention action that can be done. The main purpose of bracing treatment is to hold the curve, prevent it from progressing to the point where surgery is recommended and stopping the progression of the curves.

Braces are prescribed for young children, teenage or adults to relieve pain related to scoliosis. There are number of brace type and option and the physician will give recomendation back brace based on the degree of curvature. Patient will fitting the brace which it is a kind of device that covers the torso, in some cases the brace is has additional neck ring hold. The most physician recommended brace is a TLSO (Thoraco Lumbo Sacral Orthosis) , this model is just like a woman corset that used from underarm up to hips and customize made from fiberglass or plastic material. When patient using TLSO brace is commonly not noticeable because it can worn under their clothing. Patient will worn the brace approximately 22–23 hours a day, every patient might be has different time period to use it depending on the doctor’s prescription and point of pressure on the curves in the spine.

By using bracing will make the patient feel discomfort such as difficult to breath, presure on the stomach area and also trigger an emotional feeling. At the beginning they may find difficulty to adjust the brace with their normal activity, but over time they will definitely be able to adjust to the brace and enjoy the treatment.

Types of Scoliosis Brace

Here are several types of commonly used scoliosis brace:
1.Charleston Bending Brace ( CBB / a Night Time Brace)This type of brace that worn only at night while the child is asleep, that’s why this is also called a “Night Time” brace. A Charleston back brace is that give corrective action of the brace which molded to the patient while they are bent to the side, and thus applies more pressure and bends the child against the curve. Since the brace is only worn at night, the patients can do their normal activity such as go to school and participate in sports normally without worry if their friends knowing they have scoliosis and under the brace treatment.

2.Thoraco-Lumbo-Sacral-Orthosis (TLSO Brace / Underarm Brace )This is the most common form of a TLSO Brace and it also known as an “underarm” brace, because it is placed exactly below underarm. This type of brace is usually prescribed for curves in the lumbar or thoraco-lumbar part of the spine. It can molded from plastic material then fitted to the child’s or adult body. The TLSO brace is works at three-point pressure to the curvature to prevent its progression. TLSO brace is commonly not noticeable because it can worn under your clothing. The patient must use The TLSO brace usually 24 hours in all day activity. TLSO brace can be taken off to cycling,swimming, aerobic, play other sports or even participate in gym class .

3.Cervico-Thoraco-Lumbo-Sacral-Orthosis (C-TLSO / a Milwaukee Brace)C-TLSO brace or The Milwaukee brace is almost similar to the TLSO brace which already described above, but for C-TLSO brace there is available additional a neck ring held in place by vertical bars attached to the body of the brace. This brace also usually worn 24 hours a day, and can be taken off to regular activity which covered any kind of sport or go to office.
